Often the gateway to exploring the cultural of a society is through their museums. In Ubud the museums are focused on local painters though you will also find some sculpture. I have found Ubud museums to be great places to spend a relaxing afternoon. They all have peaceful settings and coffee shops on premises.
Here are a few Ubud Museums to check out.
The museum is situated on a gorgeous hilltop and features the works of legendary painter, Don Antonio. Antonio’s works are influenced by the beautiful people of the island. Blanco was not a native to Bali. He moved to Ubud and his arts found great acceptance among the people. Art you will find in the museum include erotic paintings of nude women and illustrated poetry. The museum is a huge majestic art center with European architecture. There is plenty to discover at this museum.
Prince Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati of Ubud founded the museum with his friend Rudolf Bonnet in 1956 and it is the oldest museum in Bali. The museum focuses on modern painters and sculptors who work in traditional styles. It’s a beautiful building and there’s a garden to relax in. Try to get to the museum in the morning as it gets quite crowded in the afternoons.
The museum was founded in 1995 by a local politician, Nyoman Rudana. It is located in Peliatan village east of the center of Ubud. The focus of the museum is preserving Balinese arts and early paintings. You will find paintings as far back as 150 years ago. It also includes modern paintings. The museum is a three floor building with much to offer.
This is perhaps my favorite museum in Ubud. One could make a wonderful afternoon out of exploring the sprawling grounds. ARMA features both modern art and some of the finest examples of the older works of Bali.
